Suffering from cognitive learning delays and dyslexia, Alyssa learned in her own unique way. Lyn spent hours researching instruction methods designed to help learners with similar special needs. Her hard work paid off as Alyssa began to prosper. When word got out about Alyssa's exemplary progress, the Goodwins received dozens of calls from parents who needed help with their children with special learning needs. Lyn began taking in additional students, and in 2004, S.U.P.E.R. Learning Center was formed in the Goodwin's basement. S.U.P.E.R. moved to the former Lakemore Elementary School in 2009. With 16 education rooms, a computer lab, a physical cognitive skills (PCS) training room, and outdoor recreation facility, S.U.P.E.R. is equipped to handle the needs of students needing early childhood development, an autism high school, or other special learning needs.
As an Ohio Autism Scholarship Provider for children ages 6 through 21, S.U.P.E.R. Learning Center specializes in educating children with cognitive learning delays. S.U.P.E.R is now home to nearly 70 students within the early development center and autism high school, most of which are diagnosed with pervasive development disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), Asperger's syndrome, and autism. But we also work with Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), dyslexia, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, and a myriad of other diagnoses.
As in the early days when Lyn searched for just the right methods to help Alyssa learn, S.U.P.E.R. still works with each student to find an individualized curriculum designed specifically for them. S.U.P.E.R. uses socialization, physical fitness, academic, and life skills to help each student uncover his or her unique heroic potential.
